Al Iksyr

Al Iksyr was distilled in 2020 using heavily resinated incense-grade wood from wild trees in Malaysia and Assam. This wild Oud is a unique co-distillation that marries the hallmarks scent profiles of vintage aged Hindi and Malay agarwood. The English word Elixir is derived from the Arabic word Al Iksyr which means “miracle substance” and this oud lives up to that name. Somehow the interaction between the Hindi and the Malay gives the Malay a vintage note normally only accessible after aging a high-grade Malay Oud for 25 years or more. Given the shock appearance of a Chinese medicinal vibe as this Oud evolves, we felt that that no other name would be appropriate. That’s right, you probably need to read that again because in my 17 years of experience with Oud I have not experienced anything like it.  This Oud pretty much represents the Al Hashimi aesthetic with it's strong projection, long lasting and robust notes and uniqueness that is rare or non-existent in the market. 

The opening scent notes of Al Iksyr start with a barn-like aroma that is reminiscent of bubbling super-grade Agarwood chips. The vintage Malay under the Hindi adds a unique touch to the scent, while the tangy umami agarwood resin gives it a complex and intriguing fragrance.

As the Oud evolves after around 5 to 10 minutes, the heart scent notes of Al Iksyr begin to emerge. The fading barn aroma is replaced with the vintage Malay reminiscent of 30-year-old Malay Ouds that appears on the surface. There is something else going on here and I cannot quite believe my nose. But yes! There is the unmistakeable medicinal signature of a note reminiscent of aged wild Yunnan Chinese Oud that adds a magnificent and pheromonal touch to the fragrance emanating from my wrist.

After 30 minutes, the base scent notes of Al Iksyr become more prominent. The barn that was slowly fading since the opening vintage Malay Agarwood liqueur scent takes over. The absence of the barn scent in this stage is a testament to the quality of this Oud, as it has been carefully crafted to eliminate any unwanted notes and create a seamless and harmonious fragrance.

 Al Iksyr is a truly remarkable artisanal Oud that offers a unique scent profile that would only be attainable through the layering of vintage – read very expensive – wild Malay and Chinese Oud. At this price, Al Iksyr really is a miracle.
